UNDERSTANDING TROPICAL STORMS IN THE CARIBBEAN

Understanding Tropical Storms in the Caribbean

The Caribbean, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant cultures, is also prone to tropical storms—a natural phenomenon that can have significant impacts on the region. These storms form over warm ocean waters and are characterized by strong winds and heavy rains, with wind speeds ranging from 39 to 73 mph.

During hurricane season, which runs from June to November, the Caribbean faces the heightened risk of these storms. When a tropical storm’s winds reach 74 mph or more, it becomes a hurricane. The effects can be severe, including flooding, storm surges, and widespread damage to infrastructure and communities.

Preparedness is key. We encourage you  to stay informed through local weather updates, have emergency plans in place, proper storage for important items and prepare supplies such as umbrellas, first aid kits,  water and  canned foods.
